Upon arrival at Tribhuwan International Airport, Kathmandu, meet and assisted by the representative at the arrival gate, followed by transfer to the hotel. Kathmandu, set at around 1,400 meters, introduces visitors to Nepal's blend of ancient temples, traditional Newari architecture, artisan workshops, bustling markets, and Himalayan surroundings. The rest of the day is free at leisure to relax after arrival and prepare for the journey ahead.
After breakfast, transfer to the airport for the scenic flight to Lhasa. On arrival at Gonggar Airport, meet the local team and drive approximately one hour to Lhasa. Set at around 3,650 meters, Lhasa is the spiritual heart of Tibetan culture and Buddhism, with the Potala Palace rising above the city, Jokhang Temple drawing pilgrims, and Barkhor Bazaar preserving the atmosphere of old Tibet. The remainder of the day is free for rest and acclimatization.
After breakfast, visit Potala Palace, Tibet's iconic landmark on Red Hill and the former winter residence of the Dalai Lama, with sacred chapels, golden stupas, murals, statues, and panoramic city views. Continue to Jokhang Temple, the most sacred shrine in Tibet, where pilgrims gather in devotion. Later, visit Barkhor Bazaar, a lively kora route and marketplace filled with prayer wheels, Thangka paintings, handicrafts, jewelry, and Tibetan cultural life.
After breakfast, visit Drepung Monastery, once the largest monastery in Tibet and the principal seat of the Dalai Lamas before the Potala Palace. Explore its grand assembly halls, scriptures, courtyards, and chapels. Later, visit Sera Monastery, famous for its lively monk debates, sacred murals, scriptures, golden-roofed temples, and peaceful surroundings, offering a deeper understanding of Tibetan Buddhist learning and devotion.
This day is reserved for further acclimatization and relaxed cultural exploration. You may stroll through nearby streets, observe local life, visit small temples, or simply rest and allow the body to adapt to the high altitude. As an optional experience at extra cost, visit Norbulingka Palace, the Jewel Park and former summer residence of the Dalai Lamas, known for its gardens, pavilions, chapels, private chambers, and Tibetan-Chinese architectural influences.
After breakfast, begin the scenic drive from Lhasa to Namtso Lake, crossing the Tibetan Plateau through open grasslands, nomadic settlements, high mountain passes, prayer flags, grazing yaks, and distant snow peaks. Namtso Lake, meaning Heavenly Lake, is one of the world's highest saltwater lakes and one of Tibet's most sacred natural sites. Its turquoise waters, mountain reflections, and serene shoreline create one of the most striking landscapes on the plateau.
After breakfast at the lodge, drive back to Lhasa along the scenic plateau route. Morning light over Namtso Lake and the surrounding mountains provides a final opportunity to appreciate the lake's quiet beauty before descending toward the capital. The return journey again offers wide views of grasslands, mountain passes, nomadic life, and high-altitude scenery. On arrival in Lhasa, the rest of the day is free for leisure.
After breakfast, depart Lhasa and drive south along the Yarlung Tsangpo River valley through farmlands, Tibetan villages, wide river plains, and mountains. Visit Samye Monastery, founded in the 8th century and known as the first Buddhist monastery built in Tibet, designed in the form of a mandala. Continue to Tsedang, regarded as the birthplace of Tibetan civilization, with ancient legends, monasteries, fields, rivers, and traditional settlements.
After breakfast, drive to Gyantse with a stop at Yamdrok Lake, one of Tibet's three sacred lakes, known for its jewel-like turquoise waters surrounded by mountains. Cross Karo La Pass and admire the dramatic Karo La Glacier descending toward the road. Continue to Gyantse, a historic town on the old trade route between India and Tibet, and visit Palcho Monastery and the remarkable Gyantse Kumbum Stupa with its chapels, murals, statues, and symbolic Buddhist design.
After breakfast, drive to Shigatse, Tibet's second-largest city and an important religious and cultural center. Visit Tashilhunpo Monastery, founded in 1447 by the First Dalai Lama and the traditional seat of the Panchen Lama. The monastery is known for its golden rooftops, red walls, courtyards, murals, prayer wheels, chanting monks, and enormous gilded statue of Maitreya, the Future Buddha.
After breakfast, drive south toward Sakya through rugged high-altitude landscapes, wide open plains, distant mountains, and dry plateau scenery. Sakya is known for its historic Sakya Monastery, one of Tibetan Buddhism's most important centers. Its distinctive grey, red, and white walls stand out against the stark landscape, while the monastery preserves ancient scriptures, murals, artifacts, and texts written in gold and silver ink.
After breakfast, drive toward the Everest region through vast high-altitude landscapes, open plateaus, mountain passes, barren valleys, and increasingly remote Himalayan terrain. Arrive near Rongbuk Monastery, the highest monastery in the world, set against the north face of Mount Everest. With prayer flags, stark scenery, and views of Everest at sunrise and sunset, Rongbuk offers a profound meeting point of faith, silence, and nature.
Early in the morning, proceed to Everest Base Camp on the north face for unforgettable close-up views of Mount Everest. A mandatory eco-bus is used beyond the permitted vehicle point. Everest Base Camp offers a powerful experience of glaciers, rocky terrain, mountain walls, and the highest peak on Earth. After exploring, return toward Rongbuk and continue to Old Tingri, a windswept village with views of Everest, Cho Oyu, grazing yaks, stone houses, and open plateaus.
After breakfast, drive from Tingri toward Kyirong. The route descends gradually from the arid Tibetan Plateau into greener valleys with forests, rivers, milder temperatures, and a striking change in landscape. Kyirong, near the Nepal-Tibet border, is known for its blend of Tibetan and Nepalese influences, mountain views, lush valleys, traditional architecture, local markets, and peaceful setting before the border crossing.
After breakfast, drive to the Rasuwagadhi border and complete immigration and customs formalities before continuing into Nepal. The road descends through forested hills, river valleys, and rural settlements as the journey returns to Nepalese landscapes. On arrival in Kathmandu, transfer to the hotel. This marks the end of the Tibetan overland journey, filled with sacred sites, dramatic landscapes, and profound cultural encounters.
After breakfast, transfer to Kathmandu Airport in time for the onward departure flight. The Tour of Nepal & Tibet concludes with memorable experiences of Kathmandu, Lhasa, Namtso Lake, Samye Monastery, Tsedang, Gyantse, Shigatse, Sakya, Rongbuk Monastery, Everest Base Camp, Tingri, Kyirong, and the Himalayan cultural world.
