After breakfast, begin the heritage walk in Ahmedabad’s walled city with a transfer to Swami Narayan Temple in Kalupur. Walk through the old quarters of the walled city and end at Jami Mosque for an engaging introduction to Ahmedabad’s living heritage. After the walk, continue driving to Poshina, stopping en route to visit the beautiful five-storey Adalaj Stepwell, built in the Solanki architectural style in 1498. Stepwells were built in ancient India by royal families and wealthy traders to provide drinking water and a place of rest during long journeys. Reach Poshina by nightfall. Before breakfast, visit Poshina’s main street in front of the hotel to see Garasia girls carrying wood from the forest to the market. After breakfast, visit Adivasi hamlets and Garasia settlements. The Garasias are a colourful tribe living in the mountainous regions of Gujarat and Rajasthan, while the Adivasi communities are simpler and traditionally depend on farming and animal husbandry. Visit a terracotta shrine dedicated to a local village deity, where thousands of clay horses are offered by villagers who believe the goddess grants their wishes. A customary ceremonial ritual may also be arranged under the sacred tree. In Poshina town, you can see potters creating these clay horses and even purchase one. Poshina is also home to potters, silversmiths, blacksmiths, and arrow makers. Travel by car to the Little Rann of Kutch. Visit the Kumbharia Jain Temple first, a group of magnificently carved white marble temples dedicated to the Jain Tirthankar Neminath, known for refined stone work and decorated domes. Continue to Ambaji, a highly revered mother goddess temple for Hindus, and walk through the bazaar to observe ethnic followers, especially Garasia devotees in colourful attire and some Rabari visitors. Afterwards, travel to Patan to visit Rani Ki Vav, one of Gujarat’s most remarkable monuments, and meet Patola weavers. Rani Ki Vav was built in the 11th century by Queen Udayamati in memory of King Bhimdev. Continue to Modhera Sun Temple, built between 1026 and 1027 AD, with a reservoir, assembly hall, and shrine hall richly decorated with elaborate carvings. Dinner and overnight stay at the hotel.

After breakfast, visit nearby villages and enjoy a game drive in Little Rann of Kutch Wildlife Sanctuary. The area is excellent for birdwatching, especially in winter, when flamingos and Siberian cranes can be seen near the water bodies. The sanctuary is also one of the best places to see the endangered Asiatic Wild Ass in its natural habitat, along with other animals such as Nilgai, also known as the Blue Bull. Visit the Agaria salt workers for a brief insight into traditional salt production. In the afternoon, visit villages of the Vadiara Rabari and Bharwad communities. Both Rabari and Bharwad groups are cattle herders, and in the evening you may observe them milking buffaloes and cows. Dinner and overnight stay at the hotel.

After breakfast, drive to Bhuj, approximately four hours away. Visit Dhamadka to see block printing by the Khatri community, known for creating beautiful block-printed textiles. Continue towards Bhuj, stopping en route to observe Rabari caravans. The Rabari are a semi-nomadic pastoralist community native to north-west India, especially Gujarat and Rajasthan. For centuries, they have moved across semi-arid landscapes with camels, sheep, and goats. Their culture is known for intricate embroidery, distinctive clothing, and strong community traditions. After the monsoon, usually around the end of October, Rabaris begin moving from Kutch to mainland Gujarat in search of green grass for their goats and sheep. Continue to Bhuj. After breakfast, explore Bhuj’s royal palaces, ancient museums, vibrant craft villages, and 18th-century Kutchi architecture. Visit Prag Mahal, a striking 19th-century Italian Gothic palace, and climb the clock tower for panoramic views of Bhuj’s skyline. Continue to Aaina Mahal, the 18th-century Mirror Palace, known for intricate glasswork, gold inlays, and its hall of mirrors. Later, take an excursion to Dhaneti to observe embroidery by the Ahir community and to Bhujodi to meet Vankar weavers. Ahir and Rabari women have preserved embroidery skills for centuries, passing them from one generation to another. Watch women working in their homes and see finished textiles, some created by award-winning artisans. Also visit the oldest museum in Gujarat, which houses ancient artefacts, tribal crafts, and historical scripts. Later visit Bhujodi village, a renowned textile and craft centre, and relax by Hamirsar Lake at sunset. Return to the hotel for dinner and overnight stay.

After breakfast, drive to Hodka, around 2.5 hours from Bhuj, with an en-route visit to Nirona, an artisans’ village known for multi-generational craft traditions. In Nirona, witness 400-year-old Rogan art, where artists paint vibrant castor-oil colours on fabric. Observe copper bell making and lacquer work demonstrations. Rogan art is practiced by only a few families in the world. In bell metal craft, artisans mould and tune copper-coated bells using traditional heating techniques, associated with Lohar and Vadha communities. Lacquer work uses bright natural colours carved into wood to create colourful household items, historically associated with the semi-nomadic Wadha community. Also visit Bhirandhiara village to appreciate beautifully painted houses of the Meghwar community, women’s handicrafts, colourful embroidered dresses, striking nose rings, and huts with impressive glass work on the interior walls. Continue to Hodka. Dinner and overnight stay at the hotel.

After breakfast, begin tribal immersion in Hodka village, known for its Bhunga circular mud huts with mirror-work interiors. Interact with Meghwal and Mutwa communities, known for world-class embroidery, leatherwork, and traditional mud-craft. Visit local artisans for live demonstrations of hand embroidery and leather appliqué. Later visit Gandhi Nu Gaam, also known as Ludiya, a beautifully restored tribal village with vibrant traditional architecture and local crafts. Continue to Khavda village to see Samma tribe potters creating traditional Kutch pottery. In the afternoon, drive to Kala Dungar, the Black Hill and highest point in Kutch at 462 metres. Visit the 400-year-old Dattatreya Temple and, if timing allows, witness the unique jackal-feeding ritual where temple priests offer prasad to wild jackals. Enjoy panoramic views across the Great Rann of Kutch towards India Bridge and the Pakistan border area, where military photography is strictly prohibited.
